ASPIRING MUSIC INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL

NYC, DC

ABOUT MARISSA

Marissa Miller is a student at American University in Washington, DC; she also resides in New York City during the summer. Marissa is studying Entertainment Business, her specialization is Music Industry, and her minor is Legal Studies. She is passionate about artists rights which translates into her aspiration to represent musicians as their attorney. Marissa enjoys discovering new artists and is interested in exploring A&R as a career as well. Her goal is to become a well-rounded music professional through academics and internships, so she can be best equipped to represent clients.

Experience

Permanent Press Media; Remote—Summer Intern 2025

At Permanent Press Media, Marissa got hands on experience in the field of Public Relations and how it fits into the music industry. Marissa drafted and edited press releases, updated press kits, researched trends and partnerships, helped brainstorm promo ideas, vetted potential collaborators, and gathered daily press coverage. This internship contributed to Marissa’s passion for the artist facing side of the industry. When Marissa saw her work contribute directly to an artist’s career, she affirmed that representing artists in some capacity was the right career path for her.

Electric Lady Studios; NYC—Summer Intern 2025

At Electric Lady Studios, Marissa got firsthand experience in the creative and artist facing side of the music industry. She learned professionalism, self-discipline, and even a bit about sound engineering. It inspired Marissa to take a music production class during her time abroad in London at the University of Westminster. The experience also solidified and expanded her interest in discovering new artists and exploring new genres. It also heightened her passion for artist rights and the importance of human-made art.

Extracurriculars

GRAMMYU Mentorship Program

During the Spring of 2026, Marissa will be participating in the Recording Academy’s GRAMMYU mentorship program as a mentee. This program is an opportunity for young music professionals to connect with successful industry figures and create goals to grow as a professional. I am very excited to learn more about the music industry and what it means to represent artists in different ways, whether that be as a manager, agent, lawyer, etc.

WVAU College Radio—DJ

Since the Spring of her Freshman year at American University, Marissa has been a DJ for the college radio station at her school. Currently, her show’s theme is based on the story of her time abroad as told through the songs she was listening to on her trip. Marissa has also done concert previews for DC area shows for the WVAU website. This semester I will also be involved in Web Staff where I will write album reviews and other music content.

PHILOSOPHY

Artists deserve to make music that they feel passionate about, and reflects them and their image for themselves. The music industry needs to prioritize human-made music, and fight against AI in art.
